I just noticed yesterday that FB Messenger ate my asterisks. Today, I just noticed that it was actually parsing my asterisks into bold! And it parses Markdown's syntax for italics too! I swear this is new. Try sending someone a message with Facebook and you can do: *bold* or _italics_ ... Yes, it's not exactly Markdown b/c Markdown requires two asterisks for bold, or else it functions as a synonym for italics with one asterisk. But still ...

Technically, both are broken markdown links but one of them (the empty URL/path) is a more egregious misuse/abuse of the markdown syntax. I can understand the reason for checking if the URL/path is present before attempting to resolve it, but I'm not 100% sure empty URLs/paths need to be handled in a completely separate way. There is another option for bolding text in Facebook Messenger and chat. Facebook has some existing markdown that you can use. Go to Facebook Messenger and type out the message you want to send. As far as I know, years ago it was allowed and then removed. So that's great, now I can annoy people with bold statements! :D
