In this step-by-step guide, learn how to uninstall or remove Adobe Flash Player from your Mac computer, and delete any additional related files.

Nov 12, 2020 Open Safari, click the Safari menu at the top, and select Preferences. Go to the Websites tab. Tick the Adobe Flash Player box on the left under Plug-ins. Select On from the When visiting other websites dropdown menu on the right pane. Browsers and operating systems that support Flash Player continue to decrease so Adobe strongly recommends immediately uninstalling Flash Player. Apple Safari version 14, released for macOS in September 2020, no longer loads Flash Player or runs Flash content. Please visit Apple’s Safari support for more information.

These instructions are NOT applicable to Flash Player included with Google Chrome. Visit the Flash Player Help page for instructions on enabling (or disabling) Flash Player in various browsers.

If your Flash Player installation was not successful, use the following solution to reinstall.

  1. Click the Apple icon and choose About This Mac.

    The Mac OS version appears in the About This Mac dialog.


2. Run the uninstaller applicable to your Mac OS version

  • Run the uninstaller on Mac OS X 10.4 and later, including macOS

Note:

Beginning with Flash Player 11.5, uninstalling the Flash Player resets the AutoUpdateDisable and SilentAutoUpdateEnable settings in mms.cfg to their default values:

  • AutoUpdateDisable=0
  • SilentAutoUpdateEnable=0

If you are running the Flash Player uninstaller as part of your deployment process, redeploy any custom changes to either AutoUpdateDisable or SilentAutoUpdateEnable.

Run the uninstaller on Mac OS X 10.4 and later, including macOS

  1. Download the Adobe Flash Player uninstaller:

    • Mac OS X, version 10.6 and later: uninstall_flash_player_osx.dmg
    • Mac OS X, version 10.4 and 10.5: uninstall_flash_player_osx.dmg

    The uninstaller is downloaded to the Downloads folder of your browser by default.

  2. In Safari, choose Window > Downloads.

    If you are using Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion), click the Downloads icon displayed on the browser.

  3. To open the uninstaller, double-click it in the Downloads window.

    Note: If the Flash Player installer window does not appear, choose Go > Desktop in the Finder. Scroll down to the Devices section and click Uninstall Flash Player.

  4. To run the uninstaller, double-click the Uninstaller icon in the window. If you see a message asking if you want to open the uninstaller file, click Open.

  5. Bookmark or print this page so that you can use the rest of these instructions after you close your browser.

  6. To close all browsers, either click the browser name in the Uninstaller dialog, or close each browser manually and then click Retry.

    Note: Do not click Quit in the Uninstaller window. It stops the uninstallation process.

  7. After you close the browsers, the uninstaller continues automatically until the uninstallation is complete. When you see the message notifying you that the uninstallation succeeded, click Done.

  8. Delete the following directories:

    • <home directory>/Library/Preferences/Macromedia/Flash Player
    • <home directory>/Library/Caches/Adobe/Flash Player

  1. Download the Adobe Flash Player uninstaller:

    • Mac OS X, version 10.3 and earlier: uninstall_flash_player_osx_10.2.dmg (1.3 MB) (updated 05/27/08)

  2. Choose Window > Downloads to view the downloaded uninstaller.

  3. Save the uninstaller file in a convenient location.

  4. To open the uninstaller, double-click it in the Downloads window.

  5. To run the uninstaller, double-click the Uninstaller icon in the window. If requested, enter your computer user name and password and click OK.

  6. Bookmark or print this page so that you can use the rest of these instructions after you close your browser. Close all browsers and other applications that use Flash Player, including instant messaging applications, SWF files, and projectors (EXE files that play SWF files). Otherwise, the uninstaller cannot finish (even though it appears to finish).

    Once the uninstaller finishes, the window closes automatically.

You can verify that uninstallation is complete by following these steps:

  1. Open your browser and check the status of Flash Player.

Many people would like to disable the Adobe Flash and Java plugins either for security or convenience reasons. These plugins can be disabled until you click on the content requiring the plugin, or disabled completely. Here are the steps required to ensure these plugins are disabled in Internet Explorer, Safari, Chrome, and Firefox.

Click on the gear icon and select Manage add-ons. Another way to get to this screen is to select the Manage add-ons from the Tools menu.

Select Toolbars and Extensions from the Add-on Types section on the left, and then select All add-ons in the Show drop-down.

To completely disable the plugin, right-click on its entry in this list and select Disable. To instead be prompted by Internet Explorer if you would like to enable the plugin for each site that requires it, right-click on the plugin and select More Information. From there, click on the Remove All Sites button.

This technique will, unfortunately, not completely disable the use of Java in Internet Explorer. To disable Java, open the Java Control Panel in Windows, navigate to the Security tab, and then uncheck the box labeled “Enable Java content in the browser.”

Select Preferences from within the Safari menu (directly to the right of the Apple logo in the top-left side of your screen). Next, click on the Security tab and select Plug-in Settings.

From there, you can either enable click-to-play by setting the drop-down labeled “When viewing other websites” to Ask, or you can disable the plugin entirely by unchecking the box beside the name of the plugin in the list on the left.

Google Chrome

The Java plugin no longer works with recent versions of Google Chrome (since they dropped support for NPAPI plugins). To completely disable Adobe Flash in Google Chrome, navigate to the special page “chrome://plugins” in Chrome. Find the entry for Flash and click Disable.

Chrome’s click-to-play feature has recently changed. Now, Flash and other plugins can be blocked outright, and then you can create a list of exceptions to allow sites you trust to run those plugins. To utilize this feature, select More -> Settings in Chrome.

From there, scroll to the bottom of the page and click Show advanced settings. In the Privacy section, click on the Content Settings button. The new window that appears has two sections that should be reviewed: one is labeled “Flash,” and the other is “Unsandboxed plugin access.”

To enable flash for only certain websites, select Block sites from running Flash, and then click Manage exceptions. From here, enter the website’s address, choose Allow in the Behavior drop-down box, and click Done.

To change the Flash or Java settings in Mozilla Firefox, select Add-ons from the Firefox menu.

From there, select Plugins from the list on the left, find the plugin you want to configure, and select the appropriate option in the drop-down list on the far right.

For example, to completely disable the plugin, select Never Activate, as shown for the Shockwave Flash plugin, above. To instead have Firefox ask you whether or not to run content that utilizes this plugin, select Ask to Activate.
